Professor Mark Brawley

Professor of Political Science at McGill University, Mark Brawley's area of expertise is international political economy (IPE); he is interested in both trade and international financial relations. His interests in IPE often make connections between security policy and economics. He has written books on hegemonic leadership in the international system: Liberal Leadership (Cornell University Press, 1993) and Afterglow or Adjustment? (Columbia University Press, 1999), as well as several articles on the subject. Several of his articles examine the rise of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India & China), though is most recent book is Political Economy and Grand Strategy: A Neoclassical Realist View (Routledge, 2010). His next book offers fresh insights on the failed trade agreement between the U.S. in Canada in 1911.

Bio

Born in a small town in Oklahoma, Professor Brawley then lived in Texas, Northern California, and Southern California before moving to Canada. He enjoys travelling and has visitied some 20 countries. He speaks or reads several languages other than English (including French, German and Dutch).

Education

Mark Brawley received his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Economy from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982, then went on to study at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).At UCLA, he studied under several excellent mentors, including Art Stein, David Lake, Jeff Frieden, Ron Rogowski and Richard Rosecrance. After completing his PhD in Political Science, he began teaching at McGill University in Montreal. He has been at McGill since 1990, except for one year spent as a visiting professor at Harvard University (2000-2001).
